A reader of GolfStyles wrote in recently to ask what has happened to the game of ours.
In short, he said that poorly mannered, slow-playing loons had taken over the game.
Among his examples of the crumbling foundation of the game was the noise from the crowd. When was the last time, he asked, that you watched a PGA Tour event and didn’t hear someone nitwit in the crowd scream, “You da man!” or “Get in the hole!” on virtually every shot.
He’s correct, of course, that the standards of golf today aren’t the standards of golf a generation ago. But here’s what really bothers me.
More than any other sport, golf lends itself to more stories, tall tales and anticipated getaways than any Other sport. And golf is the source for a ton of great jokes.
So why, after more than a decade of “You da mans” and “Get in the holes” can’t someone come up with something new?
